    Antibiotic susceptibility and high prevalence of extended spectrum beta-lactamase producing Escherichia coli in iranian broilers

    Extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) producing Escherichia coli have rapidly spread worldwide and cause serious threats for public health. The study was conducted to determine the antibiotic resistance and characterization of ESBL producing E. coli strains isolated from broilers in Northern Iran. Antibiotic susceptibility test was done for a total of 100 isolates of E. coli, recovered from 240 broiler fecal samples at the slaughterhouse stage. ESBL production was screened using double-disc synergy test (DDST) and presence of four ESBL genes including blaPER, blaVEB, blaTEM and blaCTX-M was tested using PCR. Among 100 strains isolated from broilers, 53 were identified as ESBL-producing E. coli. All (100) ESBL positive isolates were typed according to the presence of one or two ESBL-associated genes. The most prevalent gene among ESBLs was CTX-M (60.3) and the PER gene was not present among isolates. All isolates in this study were resistant to colistin and nalidixic acid but were 100 sensitive to cefalexin and furazolidone. The results demonstrated the high prevalence of antibiotic resistant and ESBL producing E. coli among broilers which representing the risk of increasing these strains in human infections associated with food animals

    Hepatobiliary scintigraphy with SPET in the diagnosis of bronchobiliary fistula due to a hydatid cyst

    In this report, we present the application of hepatobiliary scintigraphy using Tc-99m mebrofenin in the diagnosis of bronchobiliary fistula caused by a liver hydatid cyst, which penetrated the diaphragm. Hepatobiliary scintigraphy noticeably depicted the leakage of the tracer from the biliary system of the liver to the bronchial tree. Hepatobiliary scintigraphy stands as a robust modality in the accurate diagnosis and treatment planning of bronchobiliary fistulas. © 2015, P.Ziti and Co. All rights reserved

    Effects of mistuning on dynamic behavior of nonlinear cyclic systems with lump masses and cubic nonlinearity

    Mistuning in cyclic symmetric systems increases severely the forced response of system and splits the modes. This paper concerns with nonlinear behavior of mistuned cyclic systems. A nonlinear, mistuned model based on the method of multiple scales is proposed and formulated in which nonlinearity and mistuning parameter is assumed to be in of low order. Next, two mistuned systems were considered and solved by the multiple scale technique. Numerical results demonstrate that mistuning can lead to repeating and scattering of jump phenomena during the excitation frequency whereas in tuned cyclic system it occurs simultaneously (synchronously).Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Effect of Electron Beam Irradiation on Survival of Brucella spp. in Traditional Ice Cream

    Irradiation is a new technology which can be used for foods especially for the ones which common methods such as thermal method cannot be applied. Traditional ice cream samples were purchased from a local market. After applying a 15 kGy dose for sterilization, Brucella abortus and Brucella melitensis were inoculated to samples and then treated with four doses of 1, 2, 3 and 5 kGy electron beam irradiation at −18C storage temperature. Microbial examinations were performed in 3, 7, 14 and 21 days after treatment with electron beam irradiation. Results showed that no bacteria were observed in the initial test after use of 5 kGy dose. Applying 2 and 3 kGy reduced significantly (P < 0.05) the microbial population but could not eliminate it completely. This study confirmed that electron beam irradiation is a reliable way to reduce microbial population of Brucella spp. in traditional ice cream and therefore improve food safety. Practical Applications: To maintain palatability of traditional ice cream, milk must not be too heated or else pasteurization is not achieved. So, electron beam irradiation could ensure the safety of ice cream, instead of heat treatment. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc

    2-NBDG, a Fluorescent Analogue of Glucose, as a Marker for Detecting Cell Electropermeabilization In Vitro

    Abstract This study investigated whether molecules spontaneously transported inside cells, like glucose derivatives, can also be used as electropermeabilization markers. Uptake of a fluorescent deoxyglucose derivative (2-NBDG) by normal and electropermeabilized cells in culture was analyzed. 2-NBDG was added to DC-3F cell suspensions and cells, exposed or not to eight square-wave electric pulses of 100-ls duration and of appropriate field amplitude at a repetition frequency of 1 Hz or 5 kHz, were incubated at 37 C. 2-NBDG uptake was temperature-, concentration- and time-dependent in cells submitted or not to the electric pulses. In spite of significant uptake of 2-NBDG mediated by GLUT transporters into nonpermeabilized cells, the electric pulses significantly increased about ten to hundred times the 2-NBDG uptake into the cells. The increase in the field amplitude from 900 to 1,500 V/cm resulted in a progressive increase of 2-NDBG. Our results show that under the conditions of in vivo exposure duration to FDG and the physiological concentration of D-glucose, electric pulses increased 2-NBDG uptake into electropermeabilized cells. Under our experimental conditions, the percentage of permeabilized cells within the population of cells exposed to electric pulses remained at the same level regardless of the pulse frequency used, 1 Hz or 5 kHz. The findings showed that glucose derivatives can also be used to detect electropermeabilized cells exposed to electric pulses

    Effect of carboxymethyl cellulose-based coatings incorporated with Zataria multiflora Boiss. essential oil and grape seed extract on the shelf life of rainbow trout fillets

    To prolong the shelf life of seafood products, lipid oxidation and growth of microorganisms should be retarded. The objective of the current study was evaluating the potential application of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) coatings incorporated with Zataria multiflora Boiss. essential oil (ZMEO) and grape seed extract (GSE) on chemical (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N)), microbial (total viable count, lactic acid bacteria and Pseudomonas spp.) and organoleptic attributes of rainbow trout fillets during refrigerated storage for twenty days. GCeMS analysis showed that ZMEO is rich in monoterpene phenols such as thymol and carvacrol. The following results were obtained after 20 days of storage: The minimum level of TVB-N was measured in the fillets coated with CMC + 2 v/v ZMEO + 0.5 v/v GSE. The minimum number of total viable bacteria, lactic acid bacteria and Pseudomonas spp. were determined in the fillets coated with CMC + 2 v/v ZMEO + 1 v/v GSE. The fillets coated with CMC + 1 v/v ZMEO + 1 v/v GSE showed the best organoleptic properties. Our results revealed that CMC-based coatings incorporated with ZMEO and GSE could improve chemical, microbial and sensorial characteristics of rainbow trout fillets during cold storage. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd

    Effects of date palm fruit extracts on skin mucosal immunity, immune related genes expression and growth performance of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) fry

    The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of date palm fruit extracts (DPFE) on skin mucosal immunity, immune related genes expression and growth performance of fry common carp (Cyprinus carpio). One hundred and twenty specimens (4.06 ± 0.13 g) were supplied and allocated into six aquaria; specimens in three aquaria were fed non-supplemented diet (control) while the fish in the other 3 aquaria were fed with DPFE at 200 ml kg-1. At the end of feeding trial (8 weeks) skin mucus immune parameters (total immunoglobulins, lysozyme, protease and alkaline phosphatase activity) and immune related gene expression (tumor necrosis factor α [tnfa], lysozyme [ly] and interleukin-1-beta, [il1b]) in the head-kidney were studied. The results revealed that feeding carp fry with 200 ml kg-1 DPFE remarkably elevated the three skin mucus immune parameters tested (P 0.05) compared to control fish (fed control diet). Furthermore, growth performance parameters were significantly improved in fry fed DPFE (P < 0.05). More studies are needed to understand different aspects of DPFE administration in fry mucosal immunity. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd

    99mTc-MIBI Lung Scintigraphy in the Assessment of Pulmonary Involvement in Interstitial Lung Disease and Its Comparison With Pulmonary Function Tests and High-Resolution Computed Tomography: A Preliminary Study

    The differentiation of active inflammatory processes from an inactive form of the disease is of great value in the management of interstitial lung disease (ILD). The aim of this investigation was to assess the efficacy of 99mTc-methoxy-isobutyl-isonitrile (99mTc-MIBI) scans in distinguishing the severity of the disease compared to radiological and clinical parameters.In total, 19 known cases of ILD were included in this study and were followed up for 1 year. Five patients without lung disease were considered as the control group. The patients underwent pulmonary function tests (PFTs) and high-resolution computed tomography scans, followed by 99mTc-MIBI scanning. The 99mTc-MIBI scans were analyzed either qualitatively (subjectively) or semiquantitatively.All 19 ILD patients demonstrated a strong increase in 99mTc-MIBI uptake in the lungs compared to the control group. The 99mTc-MIBI scan scores were higher in the patient group in both the early phase (0.240.19-0.31 vs 0.110.10-0.15, P 0.14). The 99mTc-MIBI scan scores were not significantly correlated with the PFT findings (P > 0.05). In total, 5 patients died and 14 patients were still alive over the 1-year follow-up period. There was also a significant difference between the uptake intensity of 99mTc-MIBI and the outcome in the early phase (dead: 0.320.29-0.43 vs alive: 0.210.18-0.24, P < 0.05) and delayed phase (dead: 0.270.22-0.28 vs alive: 0.100.07-0.19, P < 0.05).The washout rate was ~40 min starting from 20 min up to 60 min and this rate was significantly different in our 2 study groups (ILD: 46.6115.61-50.39 vs NL: 70.9127.09-116.36, P = 0.04).The present study demonstrated that 99mTc-MIBI lung scans might distinguish the severity of pulmonary involvement in early views, which were well correlated with HRCT findings. These results also revealed that 99mTc-MIBI lung scans might be used as a complement to other diagnostic and clinical examinations in terms of functional information in ILD; however, further investigations are strongly required

    Effect of Zataria multiflora Boiss Essential Oil and Grape Seed Extract on the Shelf Life of Raw Buffalo Patty and Fate of Inoculated Listeria monocytogenes

    The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of Zataria multiflora Boiss essential oil (ZEO) and grape seed extract (GSE) on microbial and chemical changes in raw buffalo patty at a temperature of 8C. First, chemical composition and minimum inhibitory concentration of oil against Listeria monocytogenes were identified. Then, ZEO and GSE were added in raw buffalo patties and analyzed for spoilage microorganism count, lipid oxidation, pH, sensory attributes and inoculated L.monocytogenes survival at 8C for 9 days. Results revealed that samples containing 0.1 ZEO+0.2 GSE showed significant decrease in the growth of all tested microbial groups as well as the most decrease in the level of lipid oxidation at the end of storage period. Control and samples with 0.1 ZEO were the most preferred samples by sensory panelist, indicating that ZEO and GSE can be practically applied in food systems especially in meat in order to extend the shelf life. Practical Applications: Buffalo meat is highly prone to microbial and chemical spoilage as they are rich in essential nutrients and putrefying in nature. The adverse effects of various chemical preservatives caused to attract the consumer's attention to natural alternatives. Therefore, in order to increase the shelf life and quality characteristics of meat, new processing technologies and new ingredient systems that are associated with natural and organic foods are applied. These results demonstrate the potential combined use of grape seed extract and Zataria multiflora Boiss essential oil to the meat industry in the development of novel healthy meat products with improved shelf life and superior product quality. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc

    The Effectiveness of a supportive educative program on mothers’ knowledge and behavior about breast feeding in health care centers of Shahrekord city 2012

    Background and aims: Breast feeding because of many advantages is preferred on any replacement feeding for all infants. One of the major causes of discontinuation of breast feeding is insufficient knowledge of mothers from the benefits of it. So, the aim of this study was the effect of a supportive educative program on mothers' knowledge and performance that referred to health care centers of Shahrekord city. Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, carried out in 2012, 168 mothers (each group, 84 persons) were divided randomly into two groups: experimental and control. The program performed in nine sessions of 2 hours. Data collection tool was questionnaire. Questionnaires were completed by both groups; the training received after re-training questionnaire was completed by two groups. The data were analyzed by software SPSS. Results: The demographic characteristics of 2 groups were not significant different. Average scores of breastfeeding information before launching the application in the experimental group was 78.59±18.49 and in the control group 75.93±18.62 and after the program in the experimental group was 89.90±13.85 and in the control group 77.24±15.45. The average of performance scores before the program in the experimental group was 45.41±24.62, and in the control group 50.62±25.33 and after the run the program in the experimental group 76.45±21.08 and in the control group 51.04±24.80 respectively. There was no significant difference between mean knowledge and performance scores of experimental and control groups before the intervention (P=0.35), but after the intervention, difference was significant (P<0.001). Conclusion: The results showed the effectiveness of this supportive educative program on increasing mothers' knowledge and performance about breast-feeding. Regarding the cheap, simple and appropriate ability to run of the program recommended that the program performed by health workers for breastfeeding mothers even be extended to other women of reproductive age
